I'm Somewhere between Stalled Projects and Blogger's Angst

Gosh I really want to get on with posting.

But I find myself stuck in what I'm calling "blogger angst" ... feeling as though after taking some time off from the blog that a momentous return post is required.  Come back big or just don't bother.

Enough already.

If I wait until I have a big reveal to share you may never hear from me again.  Definitely been in a downward project spiral around here.  Had plans.  Hit snags.  Yep, that's multiple project plans that have developed multiple snafu's.  Now what?!?!

Well I could certainly use your creative thinking to help me move forward with my kitchen facelift.  Initially we planned on working around the existing backsplash to install  open shelving on the main kitchen wall.  For so many reasons this isn't a good solution and it just won't work.  So hubby has agreed if I can find material for a new backsplash to complement the granite countertops and create a fresher, updated, more elegant, less busy, lighter feel in the kitchen that we will tear out the wallboard and start fresh.  Yippee!

The countertops {as well as the current tiled wall / backsplash} are Baltic Brown granite.  Its a lot of busy and heavy going on.  The upside ... the countertop never looks dirty cause you're never able to see any crumbs or other on it!  Its just like a heavily patterned oriental carpet that way; no one, including the puppy dog, ever sees the dog treats laying on the rug until they are stepped on :)

The problem: Bossy, dark, and heavy patterned, Baltic Brown granite doesn't play well with current colors and products.  At least not the samples I've lugged home.  I've tried plain and simple marble.  And busy glass mosaics thinking that pattern might need more pattern to become toned down.  Neither have worked: simple marble makes the granite even heavier and an additional pattern is crazy town.

Any ideas / suggestions for a nice pairing with Baltic Brown granite?

Do you know of any bloggers who have remodeled a kitchen and worked around existing Baltic Brown granite that you can direct me to?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

We're thinking the backsplash will be full height under the exhaust hood like in this kitchen, with possibly a traditional backsplash height around the remaining countertops as seen here too.

And definitely shelves like these ...

... but installed as wrap-around shelves making use of a corner.

Thanks so much for your time today and any tile ideas and resources you might suggest.

And hey, if you've ever ripped out wallboard and tile, I'd love to hear your story and deets ... success or horror story ... I'd rather know in advance what we're taking on rather than having an unpleasant surprise!

Well this might not be the answer you wanted but I actually think you should keep the granite on the backsplash. The reason is that you are right that it's a bossy colour and you have to chose your new tile from that palette which means either brown or peach. Any new colour you add is just going to fight with the countertop. The only tile I could see working is one we used in our last house for a backsplash. It's a chocolate brown glass subway tile. I know, I know. You wish I hadn't come over today:)

I was thinking along the same lines as Carol since that colour granite is so restricting. I have subway tiles as my backsplash, but my granite is much more neutral than yours. I hope that helps:-). It's great to "see" you again. Can't wait to hear what you decide to do! XX

Hmmmm, that's a toughy, I can see how that granite would be bossy. lol Is there a way to pull out the beige/tan from it? I know beige is so ... beige, but it might the right amount of boring to blend right in with the bossy marble? And I am in love with all of your kitchen inspiration pictures. I'm day dreaming of a kitchen project. I say just keep taking your time, when the right inspiration hits you you'll be unstoppable!

Perhaps you should pick mosaics or glass tiles in one of those shades of brown so that it does not compete but complements and allows granite to blend in - in this case something neutral does not necessarily mean boring. Nothing heavy or with too many colors.

Robin! Hi! How are you? Just catching up on what you've been up to. Hope all is well. Definitely don't fret about no big come back post -- the details and little things are always just as fun. I'm thinking I agree with previous comments about the backsplash, but am going to think it over. Will let you know if I come up with anything! Xo
