Bali Hai Bachelor's Chest, Then & Now

I painted the Bali Hai bachelor's chest from my childhood bedroom a vibrant lacquer blue and placed it in our dining room about five months ago.  You can read the original post about the painting process here.

Developing our dining room decor - actually our entire first floor's decor, has been an iterative organic process of moving furnishings and accents around and around until a combination catches the eye and says ... "let's try this, at least for a while".

Our dining room has a small slice of wall - it measures 37" between the moulding of the flanking archways, that has scale and balance issues when you consider it also has a gaggle bank of lights switches, 8 in total, on a wall that soars to 10+ feet tall.  Narrow and tall ... needs to make a statement but can't accommodate anything large.  That's where the painted bachelor's chest is located and it fits the space perfectly.

Here's a Then & Now of how the bachelor's chest is styled.  Its very interesting to me how versatile this piece of furniture is and how it enables me to bring a lot of flair into the room.

Do you prefer the "Then" version?

Or the "Now" version?

{Bali Hai by Henry Link Bachelor's Chest painted Royal Blue High Gloss by Rustoleum Paints (oil paint).  Styled with a retro-modern lamp and textured silver ceramic vase, both from Home Goods, fresh tulips from the market, an oil landscape painting also from Home Goods, an original abstract art print, and tabletop accessories.}

I love how this little chest really pops with the bolder accent pieces.  The "Now" version has started me thinking about the rest of the dining room.  I have a few ideas dancing in my head and I hope to post an update soon!

So do you prefer the "Then" or "Now" version?   What changes would you suggest for the "Now" vignette styling?  Do you have a spot in your house that you quickly restyle with key accessories?  What is your most versatile piece of furniture?  I'd love to hear your ideas!

Make this a lovely weekend for yourself and I hope you'll visit again next week!

Robin -- I loved the then, until I saw the now -- it looks stunning! Totally out of a magazine. Love it!

I love that blue! I also really love the lamp and vase, so I guess I like the now... but the then was beautiful too!

Looks lovely! It's so much brighter now!

The "now" is much sleeker and sophisticated. Think you're on the right track. The less on that table, the better. It now is being shown off and the picture really had some pop. Great job!
